4/29/2020

Have you ever thought to yourself, “boy, healthy eating is expensive?” While sometimes it may cost a bit more than the processed and less healthy options, with a little planning it doesn’t have to be!

Here are my key tips to eat well while keeping it budget friendly (which I'm sure many of us will appreciate at this time)!

Homemade Protein Granola Bars

4/26/2020

Protein is one of the 3 macronutrients and makes up a large majority of our everyday meals. In fact, it should be incorporated into every meal throughout your day to help build and sustain muscle mass, up to a certain amount (there is an upper threshold to how much our bodies can digest). However, aside from the lean protein sources most of us know and love, protein is probably THE most difficult macronutrient to have in snacks. Let's be honest, no one wants to have chicken breast in their lunch, dinner AND their snacks, or fish, or beans, etc.

That's why so many of us have come to love protein bars! Not only are they convenient (perfect for us busy-bees), but most of them are loaded with protein that doesn't resemble our lunch or dinner!

However, the problem is that pre-made protein bars for sale at local grocery stores and health food stores tend to be full of other crap. And in some cases, even have ingredients that we can't pronounce (a really bad sign).

The solution?
Stick with a brand you trust (we love NAGI) OR make your own, like these delicious granola protein bars!

Walk Before You Run: A Running Warmup For All!

4/17/2020

We all know the saying “walk before you run”, but do most of us actually follow that rule?

Probably not.

However, when it comes to actually running, this is especially important if we want to avoid injury and pain! Starting a run without a proper warmup is kind of like riding the echo bike: it starts off OK, but gradually gets worse and worse until you can no longer feel your legs and everything hurts. Except, rather than have the pain dissipate shortly thereafter, it is much more likely to last and manifest itself as muscle and/or joint pain and/or stiffness. Unfortunately, most of us have likely experienced (or are experiencing) shin splints, which are terrible.

So, to avoid getting things like shin splints or other aches and pains, it’s important to make sure the body is prepared to run!

We spend 10-15 minutes warming up for our workout in class & running shouldn’t be any different!

Protein Supplements: Do We Really Need Them?

4/16/2020

One of the most popular topics I hear around the CrossFit and fitness community is “Protein Supplementation”.

What do you take for a protein supplement?
Do you use whey or vegan protein powders? What brand of whey protein do you use?

This is one of the most loaded subject matters and one that I could write a book about now-a-days.

So for this reason (and several others): today’s focus will be on educating ourselves on protein and skimming the surface on protein powders so that you all feel empowered to make more informed decisions on your nutrition! And so that you don't fall victim to marketing scams.

Simple & Delicious Carrot Muffins

With all the added time at home, our cooking skills are getting put to the test! The good news is that we have the time to try new recipes. The bad news is that everyone has gone baking-crazy & yeast cannot be found anywhere!

The BETTER news is that this recipe doesn't need yeast (yay), so you don't need to worry about fighting others at the grocery store to get the ingredients you need.

What's even better is that these muffins are the perfect snack: they're easy to make, they taste delicious, they will curb your sweet tooth but you don't need to feel guilty about it afterwards!

At-Home Towel Workout

4/13/2020

During the Covid-19 lockdown, Olympic weightlifting is surely a difficult skill to maintain when you don’t have access to proper equipment and facilities. That being said, athletes can still work on some aspects of their training in order to prevent complete de-conditioning as well as movement patterns until the end of the pandemic. Catalyst Athletics, for instance, provides an excellent at-home guide for athletes so that they can work on the maintenance of their hard-earned existing skillsets using only a broomstick or dowel, and bodyweight exercises. But, did you ever imagine that you can improve positions, activation, and muscular engagement in some areas of the Olympic lifts with only a towel?

What is online coaching?

4/12/2020

With the transition to more people working from home & the closure of gyms in the city, more and more people are also working out from home. And for a lot of us, we’re not accustomed to either, but our only choice is to adapt.

But the problem is: most of us “know” what we have to do - we need to adapt a new routine, we need to stick to this routine, we need to minimize our snacking etc. the list goes on - but we don’t have the accountability in place to motivate us to get these things done. This tends to result in a downward spiral, where sleeping in, eating poorly and lack of exercise begin to become our new “norm”. Worst of all, we stop feeling strong & confident in our skin!

So why is it that with all of the free information out there, most of us feel crippled, which results in no action being taken to help improve our overall health and wellness?

5 Things You Can Control During the COVID-19 Pandemic

4/9/2020

The rapid spread of COVID-19 has left many of us feeling helpless. But instead of focusing on what we cannot control (which will just lead to anger, sadness and frustration), we need to focus on the things we can control, as this will lead to improved mood, motivation and the ability to take action.

These are unprecedented times for everyone. No one knows what is going to happen tomorrow, next week or next month. But the more we worry about what “might happen” the more stressful this whole situation will be.

So, let’s all rally together and put our time and energy on the things we have control over during this pandemic:
