Kendal joined 6S almost two years ago and has been a shining star ever since! She came to us with some previous CrossFit experience, but that didn't stop her from wanting to learn and better herself everyday! She gave each class her best effort and worked hard to attack some of the more complex gymnastics movements.
What's even better is that from day 1 Kendal has immersed herself in the 6S community and established herself as a positive role model and leader. Kendal has been actively involved in several community events and competitions - she is always excited for new opportunities to test her fitness and challenge herself!
Throughout the years, Kendal has participated in local competitions such as the 6S Underground Throwdown and out of town ones like the UG Series beach WOD, to name a few. She also crushed the first CrossFit Open/BBL of this year, after making a switch from CrossFit to Olympic Weightlifting.
While Kendal started in CrossFit, we knew her calling was to the barbell. This led her to try to improve her Olympic Weightlifting technique with Coach Cheng and eventually Kendal transitioned to RX Weightlifting full-time. Her work ethic and determination are nothing short of incredible! Since joining RX Weightlifting almost one year ago, Kendal has competed in three competitions and in her most recent this past weekend, she hit a bunch of PRs - a 68 kg snatch and an 87 kg clean and jerk for a PR total! What a way to end 2019!
Not only is Kendal an incredible athlete, she is also a caring and giving humanitarian. Kendal spear-headed the Project Inseparable (an organization Kendal regularly volunteers with and supports) donation bin at 6S in hopes of helping other people in our community.
We are so lucky to have such a great role model in our community! Thank you for being YOU, Kendal!
We're so excited to see what 2020 brings!
Tell us about yourself.
I love dogs, coffee, and spreadsheets.
What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?
I have two degrees in classical cello performance.
How long have you been doing CrossFit? At CF6S?
I’ve been an on-and-off-again CrossFitter since 2013. I started CrossFit at CF6S almost two years ago, and transitioned fully to Oly with RX Weightlifting a year ago.
Why did you start CrossFit?
I spent a summer in Toronto before grad school and my sister asked me to do a bootcamp class with her; the coach running the class recommended I try CrossFit. Fast forward to the Winter of 2013 when I was living alone in Montreal and practicing alone for hours on end; I decided I needed a community and some fitness back in my life. I started at CrossFit Montreal and was immediately hooked. I actually learned all the movements in French first, so I was a little confused for the first few classes when I moved back to Ontario!
What’s your favourite music to workout to?
What I love about workout music is that I can give myself permission to listen to absolute trash and still dance around and enjoy it; bring on the top 40’s and one-hit-wonders!
What is your proudest CF/RX moment?
I’m proud of preparing for and competing in two weightlifting meets this year; I even brought home some hardware!
What impact has CF6S had on your life inside and outside the gym?
I have maintained the most consistency in terms of working out since starting at 6S almost two years ago, and that has made a huge impact on my physical and mental health. I had an amazing time doing CrossFit, with some amazing people (who I still like to heckle from my bench), but my year with RX Weightlifting has been something pretty special. Cheng and the RX team support you (and troll you) both inside and outside of the gym; I feel privileged to have such a dedicated coach, and to get to train next to, quite literally, some of the best in the world. I can’t wait to see what the next year of lifting brings!
For someone just starting at CF6S, what advice would you give them?
Listen to your coaches, support your team, don’t compare, and remember it is supposed to be fun!
Other than CrossFit, what do you do for fun?
Spend time with my doggos and explore new food.
2 Truths and a lie about you.
I have competed in: 1. Figure Skating 2. Speed Skating 3. Hockey
What was the best advice you were ever given?
If you believe that happiness exists somewhere else, it will never be where you are.
Who inspires you?
I’m inspired by the people in my life who are working to better themselves; work ethic and attitude go a long way in my inspiration books.
What book are you reading right now?
I just finished French Exit by Patrick DeWitt; literally one of the only books where I have consistently laughed out loud while reading.
What’s your favorite ’90s jam?
I’d say there are very few 90’s albums that are winners start to finish, so a solid one-hit-wonder playlist will do the trick every time.
Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman?
At which store would you like to max-out your credit card?
Definitely an amazing food store. One Fine Food or Eataly come to mind. I could probably also do some damage at lululemon; I saw a shirt once that said “where did all my money go?” and underneath it said “I either ate it or am wearing it” and that is definitely me.
Choose a movie title for the story of your life.
Catfish (if you know, you know).
What’s the strangest talent you have?
I am scary good at the board game Clue.
What are three things still left on your bucket list?
I’m not one for bucket lists per say, but three three things I would like to do: 1. Visit Machu Picchu 2. Build my own mid-century home 3. Have a nonna in Italy invite me into her home for a true Italian supper.
If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
Breathe under water.
CrossFit 6S team helping you achieve your fitness goals.
